EXPERIENCE:
Big Chill 2

Problem: The cold storage distribution facility in the above problem, completed in May 2002, was only a month into operation when they decided to proceed with the Phase II expansion. On June 30, 2002, that process began with the construction of an additional 35,000 sq. ft. 34°F perishable cooler and loading dock.

Solution: Because this expansion was planned for early on in the process, the industrial refrigeration addition was simplified. The requirement was to add four additional air-cooling units in the 34° cooling area, and four additional vacuum units at the 34°F loading dock area. The compressor room was initially sized to handle this expansion, so no additional compressors, vessels, or condensers were required. The pipe mains, again, were sized so that the additional load could be handled and those mains were simply extended to handle the addition of the cold storage facility. This project was fast track and in three months, from start to finish, the building was constructed and the industrial refrigeration equipment was installed.
