EXPERIENCE: Getting More Capacity From An Old Hot Box

Problem: A older beef processing plant that was initially constructed about 1955 needed additional ammonia refrigeration capacity in an old “Hot Box”, “Fabrication and Trim” and provide ammonia refrigeration to a newly remodeled area known as the “Export Room”. A replacement of an evaporative condenser tube bundle section was also needed.

Solution: The “Hot Box”, “Fab & Trim” and “Export Room” consisted of installing owner furnished evaporators that had been removed by the owner from a recently purchased facility. Gartner Refrigeration selected the evaporators, based upon refrigeration capacity, and installed them along with new refrigeration piping and control valve stations for the evaporators.

Approximately 140 TR was added to the “Hot Box”; 34 TR to the “Fab & Trim” and 22 TR to the “Export Room”. All pipe runs were installed on the roof and penetrations were made though the roof to each evaporator.

This was a turnkey project. Gartner Refrigeration was responsible for insulating the ammonia refrigeration piping; the electrical wiring and tie-ins; the roof penetrations and sealing; along with the removal of the existing condenser tube bundle. Gartner Refrigeration also updated the existing P&ID’s and plant drawings to reflect the new construction along with assisting in the development of the requirements for PSM.
