While the final draft of the rule has not been released by MDH (anticipated in late December 2010), these are some of the current rules and best practices:
- Keep following the current rule taking a weekly air sample 20 minutes after a resurface on the highest use day.
- Don’t reuse colorimetric tubes and follow the expiration dates.
- Continue submitting air quality reports to MDH on a quarterly basis.
- Never edge the ice when people are on the ice (I am not so sure who is doing this but stop, it is very dangerous!)
- Make sure that your ice resurfacer is tuned regularly and has a working fuel management system.
- Elevate the exhaust on your ice resurfacer CO and NO2 are easier to remove from the arena air when they are expelled at a higher level.
- Use your exhaust fans when needed.
- Do your best to exceed air quality standards by using electric equipment if it is right for your arena.
- Follow the progress of the rule on line at http://www.health.state.mn.us/divs/eh/indoorair/arenas/rule/2009revision/index.html where you can also sign up for e-mail alerts on updates.
- Send your comments in to the MDH!
