Government regulations require that plant Safety Directors and personnel who respond to spills or leaks in ammonia refrigeration systems, must have specific OSHA refrigeration training. OSHA Regulation 1910.120 requires 24 hours of Emergency Response Training for personnel who will plug, patch, or stop the leak.
Gartner Refrigeration, in cooperation with Industrial Consultants, holds three OSHA refrigeration training classes twice a year (February and September) that will enable your employees to obtain their ERT 24-hour certification, or an 8-hour refresher to maintain the certification.
The 24 hour OSHA refrigeration training includes classroom time, instructions on proper use of equipment, as well as a simulated emergency using gas masks, self-contained breathing apparatus, and a totally encapsulated suit.
24 Hour Ammonia Emergency Response Training
February 7-9, 2012
Medina, MN
Cost: $620.00 (lunches included)
Designed to meet the requirements of OSHA Emergency Response HAZMAT personnel. This class focuses on ammonia users who will respond to leaks or spills of ammonia. Warning: OSHA requires that all personnel who are expected to respond to chemicals must be trained according to 1910.120(q). This includes persons who will be responsible with the fire departments.
The seminar will include 24 hours of training and includes classroom as well as simulated emergencies using gas masks, self-contained breathing apparatus, and totally encapsulated suits. Each attendee will receive a valuable 167 page training manual and incident checklist.
At the end of the third day, the attendees will be required to take a 60 question examination. Upon satisfactory completion, certificates will be awarded which document that the OSHA Training Requirements have been met.
Ammonia Emergency Response Refresher Training
February 9 OR 10, 2012
Medina, MN
Cost: $300.00 (lunch included)
Designed to meet the mandated training requirements of OSHA Emergency Response 1910.120(q). OSHA requires that all responder personnel must have annual refresher training. (Prerequisite: 24-Hour Ammonia Emergency Response Training)
Incident Commander Training - SEPTEMBER ONLY
Only in September
Medina, MN
Cost: $300.00 (lunch included)
Using outside or in-house personnel to control a leak or spill, responsibility for damages rests with the facility that owns the ammonia. Even if you plan on having outside personnel handle the leak, it makes good sense to have your own people trained to assist and look out for your company's interest. Your own personnel have better knowledge of the equipment and how to control leaks and spills.
During an emergency response, there must be an incident commander, and an incident command system (ICS). OSHA regulation 1910.120(q)(3) requires the implementation of an ICS. An Incident Command System, no matter the size, is intended to reduce confusion, improve safety, organize and coordinate actions, and promote safe management of the incident. At locations where there are no outside response teams, OHSA will expect you to have a team to handle the spills or leaks.
You should have a minimum of two trained commanders per shift. The Incident Commander can come from a cross section of personnel, but generally are members of management, engineering, maintenance, refrigeration, safety and production.
